The day has finally arrived! You know that bucket list trip you’ve always dreamt about? I’m barely out of bed at 8:00 am but this morning I jumped out of bed at 6:30 am excited and thrilled to go to the airport!!!
Friends of mine have always said the best vacation they have ever had is the one where they chartered a catamaran and set sail in the Virgin Islands. After hearing their stories this became a trip on my bucket list for 10 years. 10 Years! This is BIG!
There is an excitement of finally making those dream trips come true.
Just imagine, blue sky, the wind through your hair, feeling relaxed, a tropical cocktail in your hand and sailing far away from it all. Everyone needs a moment like this in their life.
Take a Device Detox Vacation
Vacations are great to unplug but we can still be reached at any time via our mobile phones. How many vacations have you been on and your family members can’t seem to break away from their iPad, laptops, and phones? They have become an addiction. You see couples in the most romantic destinations and they are both on their phones (guilty of this one) I don’t want to be that couple! You’ve seen families on vacations the kids are playing games on the iPads in a cabana on the beach instead of playing in the pool or on the beach. I know I have. My husband and son got addicted to an online game called Magic on our Cozumel trip. They can do that at home but they can’t play beach volleyball at home. My question is what are the greater memories? Social media is great because I love people and love connecting with them but I realize it is important to do this with the people who I can be face to face with.
One of the reasons people say a sailing catamaran charter is the best vacation of their lives is because they truly unplug. There is limited wi-fi. I may not have cell service or wi-fi on this trip. It is a scary thought. I can’t remember the last time I unplugged completely.
The Blogger in Me
In the first year of my blogging lifestyle, I have become glued to my phone and laptop. I wonder will I still have followers if they don’t hear from me for a week. Will everyone miss me online? I feel like a puppy with separation anxiety. My husband says I am always on my phone or laptop.
A goal of this trip is to be in the moment of my surroundings, connect with the people around me, and take a break from my cell phone, laptop, and social media. WHAT! I know! It is going to be a challenge because the blogger in me will want to show you a picture of the famed Soggy Dollar Bar in an insta-moment, show you how beautiful the islands are, and want to connect with you. I may go through social media withdraws!!
I realize the need to decompress after my first year of blogging. As a travel blogger, even my vacations have changed. My thoughts are always about the photographs, what will my followers like, and the pressure to get the next great photograph for Instagram.
Take that Bucket List Trip
This is a bucket list dream trip and I am fortunate to finally be going on it. I’ve waited so long! Instead of being connected, I want to create memories, learn about sailing, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Caribbean. Craving to feel carefree, relaxed, and enjoying my husband and friends is how vacations should be. I want to capture the moments through the lens of my old Canon Rebel. Living in Colorado, a landlocked state, I need more Vitamin Sea in my life! Snorkeling, paddleboarding, sailing, day drinking, and reading a book is my perfect idea of the best vacation!
I’m not going to go away, I am just going on vacation! ONE WEEK No phones (only on airplane mode for photos), no email, and no social media. A media detox week. Who knows, this may just be the best vacation I’ve ever had……
Maybe you need one too….
Questions to Ask Yourself
When was the last time you spent a week completely away from your mobile phone, laptop, social media, and email?
How did it make you feel?
Did the world survive?
Do you feel like you can truly unplug?
What about your connections with friends and family, Did you connect more with them on your vacation?
New friends? When traveling are you open to meeting new people and making friends?
Did you gain more time to do or try new things?
In a world where we can be connected 24/7 and it seems the world expects us to be, even our jobs.
Do you feel like you ever can fully disconnect and take a device detox?
Did you suffer any problems from disconnecting?
I’ll be answering these questions when I get back.
Bon Voyage,
Bonnie
There is something that takes all cares away when you are on a boat. We have only experienced day sails when we travel this will be our first overnight sailing trip in the Virgin Islands. Stay tuned about the experience.
