Grand Velas, Riviera Maya Spa Experience

in Mexico, Spa Reviews on 07/04/17

Calgon, Take me Away…..

Remember that commercial? A Mom in desperate need of pure relaxation. A recent spa day at the Grand Velas Riveria Maya made me think of that commercial. It was a day of pampering and unwinding. In our busy lives,  it is good to treat yourself to complete and total relaxation, like a spa day.

If you are dreaming of peace, quiet and relaxation. You will want to book a trip to the Grand Velas Spa in the Riviera Maya area of Mexico. It’s just about 35 minutes south of the Cancun International Airport. The Grand Velas, Riviera Maya was just ranked a 2017 Travelers Top Choice on Trip Advisor. It’s not a surprise that their spa has received numerous accolades from Spa Finder, USA Today, SpaAwards.com, Travel + Leisure and Trip Advisor for Best Spa Hotel in recent years.

“Voted Best Spa in the World” by Virtuoso in 2010

The Grand Velas Spa is one of the region’s largest spas at approximately 90,000 square feet. What makes this spa unique is the large hydrotherapy pool and the seven-step journey. When you book a spa treatment make sure you arrive at least an hour early because the seven step journey will leave you feeling simply amazing. You will want to plan hours in the spa. Plan to re-visit your favorite rooms again after your treatment. The Hydrotherapy pool offers a sensory pebble walkway, cascades, bubbles beds, neck massage jets, a bubble geyser. You can just chill out and relax in the chaise lounges by the pool with a book or magazine.

A flower mosaic by the pool

Your seven- step water journey begins by meeting your spa attendant. She will lead you through a sequence. A shower, the sauna, the color therapy steam room, the ice room, the clay room, and then the experience shower. The color therapy steam room was my favorite room. I went back again after the massage a second time. It’s super relaxing with the soft lights changing colors and pleasant feel of the warm steam.

The ice room is chilly and you rub aloe lotion all over your skin.

Next, they give you a square of clay to use in the clay room. Rub it all over your skin. You can even put some in your hair too. Then rinse it off with the spray wand in the room. My skin has never felt so soft and this is prior to my massage! Your spa attendant keeps track of your time in each room and comes to get you when its time to move to a new room. She will also keep track of your spa appointment time and escort you to the waiting area before your service.

Great design use of bringing the outside in. Natural lighting and windows are a key design element in this spa!

“I’ve been to luxury spas in Las Vegas with various spa rooms like a snow room, aromatherapy room, and color therapy steam rooms before but the Grand Velas is the best spa I’ve have ever been to. ” Bonnie

The Massage Service

This was the most, unique massage I have ever had. It was more than a massage, it was a healing ritual! The service began in a seated position with Daniela putting my feet in a bowl of millet. You won’t believe how good millet feels on your feet! She went through a series of Mayan- influenced steps, from rubbing my back to feel the heat and fire, covering my ears with a shell to hear the wind (at least I think it was a shell.) She was going through the natural elements of the Earth. I loved it! My husband said he was trying not to giggle during this process. He knew I was just loving it!

The Massage Treatment Room

After, the seated series of going through the natural elements, your attendant will leave you to unrobe and lie down on the massage table. Before Daniela started her massage she poured water with oils into a bowl that rose up through my nose. I had a bit of a cold and this really helped my congestion. The smell was so fragrant and I knew we were off to a good start.

Her massage was perfect with just the right pressure. It was just what I needed to ease the tension in my neck and shoulders. This was the best massage I have ever had. The 50 minutes ended too soon! This was more than your typical massage. I loved the process of the seated position, the millet, the aromatherapy, and energy work. It was a bit like telling a story. After the massage was over, she walked around the massage table chiming the chimes together. You can see them on the table in the picture above. I definitely felt like a Mayan- influenced massage had more healing powers than a typical massage in the US. Daniela is a healer at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya Spa.

I said, ” You are amazing, I feel so much better.” She simply said, ” I love what I do.”

If I lived closer, I would visit this spa frequently. Yes, it’s expensive at $236 for a 50- minute massage. Knowing what I know now, I would pay for it and make a full day out of it. I would enjoy the quiet and read a good book by the pool. I was lucky because my husband’s Club VIP trip was at the Grand Velas. His company gave us the option for 2 excursions during his convention. The spa was the best one to choose! Several ladies in the clay room liked the spa so much they came a second time during the 4 night trip. I don’t know if it’s the Best Spa in the World but I do know, it’s the best spa I’ve ever been to.

Be sure to try the tea after your service!

If you love to spa, plan a trip for yourself. This was a luxury spa at it’s finest. Once there, you realize why it’s been ranked as the best spa in the world.

It’s important to do something good for your mind, body, and soul.

After all, ” You deserve it.”

Bonnie

“All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. I did not receive compensation from the spa or resort, or any other to write this review.” I just love to spa and lucky for me this experience was paid for by my husband’s company as part as a sales incentive Club trip. Good job, Gary!”

It has the best year round weather in the US. It’s mostly 70 degrees and sunny. There is so much outdoor things to go do like sail, surf, ride bikes, play on the beach, watch the amazing sunsets and hope for the green flash, shop, dine, go whale watching or see dolphins! It’s been a nice break from the cold weather in Colorado.
