Mykonos, Greece is a place where the jet set comes to party, where beautiful people lie on the beautiful beaches and play in the Aegean Sea and Champagne is limitless, and the bars are hopping until the wee hours with people dancing all night long. There are many experiences to be had while vacationing in Mykonos.
Taking a Vacation to Mykonos?
I always felt a strong desire to visit Mykonos after I saw a photograph of Little Venice. The whitewashed buildings with shutters of red and blues built right along the sea was a scene that could be on a movie set.
Old windmills the kind you only see in Greece was a backdrop for a romantic sunset that seemed more like colors of orange you would see in a painting instead of a real sky.
Mykonos is a place where romance comes alive.
My original plan to visit Mykonos was when we were in our early 30’s on our fifth year wedding anniversary however, my plans changed when our ferry headed to Mykonos stopped in Paros instead. They made everyone get off the ferry due to high winds and ceased all ferry service. The ferry companies did not run for another three days. Paros is another beautiful island and less expensive but this will be saved for another story.
14 years later we finally had the opportunity to finally visit Mykonos. We are older now and not so much the party scene types but the photographs always captivated me of Mykonos. You don’t have to be young to enjoy the nightlife or Mykonos Town.
Staying in Mykonos Town
I knew I wanted to stay in the Mykonos Town and be able to walk to Little Venice. Coffee in the mornings by the sea in the little cafes with the waves crashing up sounded like an experience I often daydreamed about. The nights would be celebrated with Champagne in these same spots watching the sunset over the windmills and clear blue sea.
We stayed in Mykonos for 3 nights. The music was loud, the sunsets to die for, and lots of people filled the meandering maze-like alleyways at all times day and night. Mykonos Town is fun and happening. Quite deliriously jet lagged we found ourselves reliving our youth and staying up past 2:00 am in the evenings enjoying the music and people watching. When we left Mykonos we were ready to relax and move to another island that is quieter and get some rest.
Favorite Experiences in Mykonos
It was an Anniversary vacation so it was time to Pop the Champagne. We purchased a bottle of Moet Imperial Champagne from a local liquor store for $45 Euro. Our favorite thing to do was to sip Champagne on our private deck of the Little Venice Suites watching the sun go down over the Aegean Sea.
( Tip- Buy Duty Free before coming to Mykonos to save money or purchase in a local liqour store. Drinks are quite pricey especially Moet. A vendor on the street was selling bottles for $85 Euro)
Food – A pork Gyro from Jimmy’s was my favorite Gyro, although my husband liked his from Souvlaki Story more. It was a debate for the rest of the trip which Gyro was the best.
Little Venice in Mykonos Town was our favorite place to hang out day and night.
I Wish I had booked a sunset sail in Platys Gialos! So did my husband once he got there.
Something New– Tried my first Aperol Spritz at the Tropicana Club
Coffee with a view– Kastros in Mykonos Town
Lucky Moment– I left my purse on a bench near the Ferry port. About 15 minutes later after realizing I left it, in a panic, I ran back to the bench. It was gone. I asked the girls at the ferry office if anyone had turned it in. She said to check with the Coast Guard office upstairs. Fortunately, they had it and everything in my purse was there! Whew! In the Greek culture they believe it is embarrassing to steal from others but keep in mind theft can happen anywhere in the world. Don’t leave your valuables like I did!
Another lucky moment happened to our son on his trip to Greece……….
Our young son went to Greece and left his Ducati watch in his hotel. At the ferry dock in Paros, a man from the hotel on a scooter chased him down to return it. Isn’t that amazing?
We had a wonderful, romantic vacation to Mykonos. These were our favorite experiences during our trip. All ages will enjoy this beautiful island and everyone will have a unique and different list of favorite things.
